Cotton Mill Preservation Honored by

Indiana Department of Natural Resources

( October 28, 2003 )

On October 17, 2003 , Lincoln Hills Development Corporation (LHDC) was honored by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), Division of Historic Preservation and Archeology, at the Annual Statewide Historic Preservation Conference held in Fort Wayne , IN. LHDC Executive Director, Larry K. Kleeman, was on hand to accept the award for Outstanding Adaptive Reuse for the Indiana Cotton Mill in Cannelton , IN , which was preserved, rehabilitated and converted into seventy (70) units of affordable rental housing by LHDC.

During the conference, five outstanding historic preservation and archeology efforts in Indiana were recognized by IDNR Director, John Goss. “Each year”, said Goss, “we look at this special niche in our storied and historic past. At tonight’s awards we create an opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to those who have gone above and beyond the ordinary to preserve an important piece of our history. These awards demonstrate that through the years, all Hoosiers, rich and poor, young and old, black or white, have contributed to make our state such a great place to live and raise a family.”

In accepting the award, Kleeman recognized and thanked LHDC’s many partners who helped in the preservation effort, and said, “we are truly grateful for this award from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and glad that our work helped to preserve the historic Indiana Cotton Mill, a National Historic Landmark.”
