LHDC to Rededicate Elderly Apartments
Lincoln Hills Development Corporation (LHDC) will host an open house and rededication ceremony on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 , from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon (CDT) for its LHDC Housing for the Elderly apartments located at 824 Washington Street , Tell City . The ceremony will showcase the extensive rehabilitation and modernization that was recently completed on the apartments, through a $425,000.00 HOME grant from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA). IHCDA Executive Director, Sherry Seiwert, will also be on hand to participate in the events.
The original construction on the elderly apartments was completed in 1981, through a 202 loan from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The 3-story structure has 21 one-bedroom and 3 two-bedroom units, and was the first housing property developed by LHDC, as well as the first rural 202 elderly apartment project in the state.
LHDC Executive Director, Larry K. Kleeman, said “The apartments have provided safe, decent and affordable housing for the elderly and disabled residents of Perry County for over a quarter of a century. These apartments maintain near 100% occupancy, which is indicative of the need for this type of housing in our community. We’re grateful for the funding that the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority provided that enabled us to complete the rehabilitation and modernization measures, and the apartment residents are thrilled with the improvements.”
Since the Tell City Housing for the Elderly apartments opened in 1981, LHDC has continued developing needed affordable rental housing and now owns and/or manages nineteen developments, with over 600 units, in fourteen communities throughout much of southern Indiana . Kleeman concluded, “We are proud to be recognized as a leader in southern Indiana in the development of decent and affordable rental housing. No one should have to live in unsafe or inadequate housing, and many families, and elderly and disabled residents in our communities, simply would not be able to find or afford decent housing if these apartments didn’t exist.”
