Community Service Programs

Energy Assistance Programs
In Crawford, Perry and Spencer Counties, assistance may be available to help low-income, elderly and disabled households in paying their winter heating bills. Assistance may also be available for summer cooling.

Summer Cooling Program provides air conditioners to elderly and disabled families.

Summer Fill Program provides a supply of bulk fuel (heating oil, LP gas, wood, kerosene), purchased at lower summertime prices, in preparation for the upcoming winter season.

In Crawford, Perry and Spencer Counties, assistance may be available to provide homeowners and renters with weatherization measures to make their homes more energy efficient and reduce long-term energy usage.

Food and Shelter Program
Through funds received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Emergency Food and Shelter Program, LHDC provides assistance, which supplements the needs of local food pantries.

State Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program
LHDC provides rental assistance, through Section 8 vouchers, in Crawford, Gibson, Spencer, Warrick and Vanderburgh Counties.

Cannelton Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program
LHDC contracts with the Cannelton Housing Authority to administer this program which provides rental assistance through Section 8 vouchers in Cannelton and Perry County (excluding Tell City).

Individual Development Accounts
LHDC offers Individual Development Accounts (IDA’s) – special savings accounts for qualified persons – to be used for purchasing a home, starting a business, and attending college or other training. Deposits are matched 3:1 up to a maximum $900 match for $300 deposited.

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)
Retired and senior volunteers, age 55 and over, provide volunteer services at community worksites, such as schools, libraries, and food pantries, throughout Crawford, Perry and Spencer Counties.

Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program
The Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program provides vouchers to income eligible elderly or disabled persons, to be utilized to purchase fresh, nutritious produce and items at local Farmer’s Markets.
