How does the Section 8 Rental Assistance Program work?
The Section 8 Rental Assistance Program is one of the federal government’s major programs for assisting lower-income families to secure decent, safe, sanitary housing. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides funds to subsidize the difference between what an eligible household can afford and the HUD-approved rent for the approved housing unit. Eligible tenants will typically pay not more than 40% of their adjusted gross income toward rent, including utilities. Section 8 housing must meet certain standards for safety and housing quality, and rents must be reasonable and fall within the Fair Market Rent and Voucher Payment Standard limitations determined by HUD and the Housing Authority. The rental assistance may be used in existing, new, or rehabilitated units. Tenants must meet the income guidelines established for the program. |

Once an application is received, it is reviewed and processed timely. However, assistance is not immediate.
The waiting list is maintained by the Cannelton Housing Authority and the names are placed on the list according to established program preferences.
Tenants are responsible for the following:
Payment of their portion of the rent on a timely basis.
Maintaining the property in a decent, safe and sanitary condition.
Reporting changes in family income or composition to LHDC immediately.
Giving 30 days prior written notice if they plan to move.
Complying with all lease provisions.
Reporting problems with the unit to the landlord immediately.

To apply for this program, please complete and sign the following forms. When returning your application, you must submit Birth Certificates and Social Security cards for all members of your household.
